Child-friendly button cell battery and Ocean Grazer nominated for Best Tech Idea 2023

The child-friendly button cell battery (UMCG and TU Delft) and UG spin-off Ocean Grazer are nominated for the Best Tech Idea 2023. The innovations need your vote to win the award.

The child-friendly button cell battery is an initiative of cardiothoracic surgeon Tjark Ebels and ENT specialist Freek Dikkers (both UMCG), Professor of Storage of Electrochemical Energy Marnix Wagenmakers and research technician Frans Ooms of the TU Delft. Together, they developed a child-friendly button cell battery containing a mechanism that will interrupt the flow of the button cell battery when it gets swallowed. This prevents severe damage or even death by young children.

Ocean Grazer is a UG spin-off, resulting from research by Professor of Mechatronics and Control of Non-linear Systems Bayu Jayawardhana, Professor of Mechanics and Tribology of Engineering Systems Antonis Vakis and Drs Wout Prins. Together, they developed the Ocean Battery that stores offshore renewable energy.
